A NOTE FROM SUPERINTENDENT GOTTO | MARCH 12

Dear Westminster Public Schools Community,

Next month the City of Westminster and Adams County will hold a special event to celebrate students from across the region who have, “overcome personal adversity to create a positive change in their lives.”

This special recognition is called the Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award and I am thrilled to tell you that three of our Westminster Public Schools students have been selected for the honor. They were nominated by their teachers or school counselors.

They are:

Ana Karen Mendoza Ontiveros from Hidden Lake Secondary School

Justice Avila from Metropolitan Arts Academy

Jhoan Chirinos Pereira from Westminster High School

WPS leadership will be at the ceremony on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 to celebrate with them and proudly share their stories with the community. As we celebrate their successes, we recognize that these students are representative of many of our children and their families who face daily challenges and persevere. They have discovered that having faith in themselves and a willingness to work hard can help to overcome many of life’s obstacles. They also understand that education remains the great equalizer in society and the path to success.

That point was driven home to me earlier this month when so many of us took time out of our busy schedules to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday with the Read Across America Program. I had the pleasure of reading to students at Mesa Elementary. It is an incredible feeling to see children’s eyes light up as they listen to stories, understand the joy of learning, and let their imaginations take hold.

As Dr. Seuss wrote;

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!
